2008 Season Predictions With J.T. O’Sullivan

Week 1 Sept. 7 Arizona Cardinals – Win
Much as it sickens me to see another quarterback reprising the game that Alex Smith won for us last season, I see this as a winnable game, provided the running game is working. O’Sullivan can manage this one well if the line can give him time. Arizona’s D is okay, but not scary.

Week 2 Sept. 14 at Seattle Seahawks – Loss
Seattle will be too tough in their own house. Crowd will be pumped in Week 2, Holmgren’s last year, have to go out with a bang. Our line will struggle, therefore so will O’Sullivan.

Week 3 Sept. 21 Detroit Lions – Win
This one is too important to Mike Martz and O’Sullivan. Martz knows Kitna’s tendencies and the Niners Defense will be all over him. The issue for Detroit is the run game, and they cannot survive throwing the ball too much on our sod.

Week 4 Sept. 28 at New Orleans Saints – Loss
The Saints won’t be nearly as good as everyone thinks, but good enough in Week 4 to beat the 49ers. The defense is improved, but not that well improved. This will be a very tough crowd to play in front of, and O’Sullivan will be flustered.

Week 5 Oct. 5 New England Patriots – Loss
The Patriots also will not be as good as they were last year, but I believe they have too many weapons for us to cover, and their defense is just way too good. J.T. O’Sullivan will look arguably his worst here, and I still think may get injured by some hard hits.

Week 6 Oct. 12 Philadelphia Eagles – Loss
The Eagles are being sold entirely too short this season. They are a team on a mission, McNabb is completely healthy this season, and their defense will be strong, especially the secondary. We will run the ball well, but not enough to win, as we struggle with 3 and outs.

Week 7 Oct. 19 at New York Giants – Loss
I believe this game will be much closer than it was last season, but J.T. O’Fumble will strike again as they still have Umenyiora and Justin Tuck on the other side of the ball. Their pass rush will be too strong and I see Adam Snyder struggling here.

Week 8 Oct. 26 Seattle Seahawks – Win
I’m going to go with a win here because I don’t believe the team will let Seattle sweep them in front of the home crowd. With an anticipated four-game losing streak, it’s possible J.T. O’Sullivan may be benched, especially if he’s hurt after the three fierce defenses he faces. To be clear, I think any of our quarterbacks could be hit a lot during this stretch.

Week 9 Nov. 2 Bye
If the Niners come into the bye at 2-6, someone will lose their job, and I suspect it will be a quarterback. If they are 2-6 and O’Sullivan is not benched, I will be amazed. If they are 3-5 then it’s easier for Nolan to stick to his guns, especially if O’Sullivan gets the win against Seattle. If it’s Smith in the Seattle game and we’re 3-5 it becomes extremely interesting. That being said, I continue with O’Sullivan.

Week 10 Nov. 10 (Mon.) at Arizona Cardinals – Loss
This game depends heavily on what’s going on personnel-wise. Arizona could very well be much better than last year, and it appears Leinart is also improving. This will be a great division battle, looking dramatic if Alex Smith is the guy on the White Horse, or if O’Sullivan is looking to improve. Since he’s not good, it’s a loss.

Week 11 Nov. 16 St. Louis Rams – Win
I know Martz would love to win this game, and so would Isaac Bruce. Marc Bulger should have a better handle on Al Saunders’ offense here. The Rams just don’t have a very good defense, but our D has to contain Stephen Jackson. It’s a short week after a Monday night road game, so I hope they’re rested.

Week 12 Nov. 23 at Dallas Cowboys – Loss
We’ll know by this time whether the Cowboys are for real this year or not. They appear to be okay right now, but how will their running game perform? O’Sullivan won’t have enough to win this game, and you need a Quarterback to win this game, not just manage it. Would be closer if it were at home.

Week 13 Nov. 30 at Buffalo Bills – Loss
This could be contingent upon who plays quarterback at this stage. Cold weather, you expect Smith to be okay. O’Sullivan we just don’t know about yet. The bigger question is the Bills. How good is their defense and how will Losman be doing? If we can run on the Bills and contain their offense I think we can win it. But I think the Bills will be too much at home.

Week 14 Dec. 7 New York Jets – Loss
Brett Favre knows what it’s like to play on grass, and he also knows what it’s like to win in San Francisco. He will be on a tear at this point, with the offense down pat. That plus the balance between his arm and Thomas Jones’ running and the strength of their division makes the Jets a lot tougher in December. Their defense will also be improved, but this could pobably be a back-and-forth game with Favre coming out on top.

Week 15 Dec. 14 at Miami Dolphins – Win
The Niners will be really searching for a win at this point, and the Dolphins will make a tantilizing opponent. They just have too many holes to be a winning team, and Frank Gore is coming home so you know he’ll be running like a gazelle.

Week 16 Dec. 21 at St. Louis Rams – Loss
Again, Martz really wants to stick it to the Rams, and so does Isaac Bruce. I do not assume the Rams will be as bad as last year, and should be clicking very well offensively. I’m hoping to be in the crowd for this game. I hate to predict a loss for a game I’m at, but this is a very active home crowd, and I think the defense will wear down against Stephen Jackson and Torry Holt. It will probably be a shootout.

Week 17 Dec. 28 Washington Redskins – Loss
Washington will likely be heading for the playoffs, but in the uber-competitive NFC East, they need to solidify their position here. They could be fighting for the wildcard if the Cowboys come through. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Skins and the Giants tied for the wildcard. The Skins will be fighting for their lives. Their defense is good, their offense will be good, and the Niners offense won’t be good enough.

That says 6-10 right there, which is as much as we should expect with Game Manager J.T. O’Dilfer at quarterback for an entire year. This will not be enough improvement to save Mike Nolan’s job, and ownership will likely go in a different direction. If people are clamoring for the backup quarterback to go in all year, and Nolan and Martz both stubbornly stick to their guns, the outcry will be too much, and the team will go in a different direction.

That being said, I don’t see O’Fumble lasting the whole season. The 49ers need a quarterback who can win games, not just manage the game, especially with this difficult schedule. Four games against the NFC East, Four games against the AFC East, and an NFC West that is stronger gives us a more challenging venture than 2007, as bad as 2007 was. Considering that J.T. O’SUllivan right now is not demonstrably, concretely better than Alex Smith, I believe Smith will be better the further through the season we go. When Nolan and Martz realize that they need a quarterback who can outrun NFL linebackers without endangering the ball, who can get the ball downfield in the wind at Candlestick, who can take an NFL hit (shoulder notwithstanding), then they will put Smith in. The only question is when.

I mostly agree with your assessments, however I feel the slightest bit of improvement in offense over last year could put us at 5-1 in the division. Sweep the Rams and Cards, split with the Hawks. the four teams I feel we have NO chance against (Giants, Pats, ‘Boys, Eagles) will likely sweep the whole NFC West, so it’s already down to a 12 game season for division leader. Go 5-1 in the West and we’re in good position. Dolphins, Jets, Bills, Lions, ‘Skins all these games come down to turnovers. Saints CAN be good but CAN stink up the place like the Dome did after Katrina.

O’Sullivan is not the long term answer in ANYONE’S opinion, but we do need to hit the ground running with the winnable division games right off the bat. There’s more going on than what we see in preseason games, the coaches are with these guys day in and day out. Anyone who has caoches a team knows what its like for one player to be awesome in practices and scrimmages, then nosedive in the big game. 10-6 and the NFC West crown!!!!

Don’t you have a daytime job Indy?

Comment by hojer49

Sffan_49 – I don’t think the NFC West is that weak a conference that a slight improvement gets us to the top of it.

hojer49 – a day what?

Comment by indianajim

thats why ur in indy, we stay faithfull out here 10-6 this season its time we shine. theres a lot of talent out there waiting to make a name f a quarter back they dont all ways win games.

BIG 49

It has nothing to do with living in Indiana. Through the magic of the internet I see every game, I read every report, and I hear every analyst. I think I’m okay in that department, bud.

There is a difference between a quarterback who can win games and one who merely manages the offense. This team needs one to win.

Comment by Indiana Jim

Alex Smith is a BUST who couldn’t hit any receiver for the past three years, why would we want him in there? Its his fourth year and he couldnt even beat out a journeyman from U.C. Davis. I say sign Culpepper who is jobless and see how he can compete with O’Sullivan. Anybody but Smith.

Comment by joe gomez

Daunte Culpepper was terrible with the Raiders, and had one or two good games with the Dolphins. There’s a reason Leftwich got signed by the Steelers and Culpepper did not. Culpepper is a highly overrated quarterback who demands far too much money and has way too much ego. You can call Alex Smith whatever you like.

Comment by indianajim

Maybe Martz feels Smith can’t be expected to learn his system in one preseason. Head smart is one thing, mechanics and timing are another. This may finally be Smiths chance to learn by observing & practising until his skill level exceeds JTO around midseason and the QB situation resolves itself. At that point, any offensive success combined with an already lethal defense will bring new attention to the 49ers for having climbed back in the saddle.

Comment by Steve Gheen

Yeah Steve, I don’t know if that’s by design, but probably will help in the end. Certainly won’t hurt Alex any.

Comment by indianajim

Indy, I think you are too focused on one side of the ball. I thnk our defense is going to be one of the best, making a major improvemnt over last year. Defence will win at least 4 games for us. 10-6

Comment by 49er 69her

49er 69her you may be right about that, but the QB competition is the largest question this season.

I don’t know if the defense will be enough to win games for us, because we will probably end up with what we had last year, and that is a defense that stays on the field too long. If they can get more turnovers than last season, maybe.

So far the guy that leads the most sustained drives per possession is Alex Smith.

Comment by indianajim

Look Alex is not the future of this team, 3 years has proved that. JTO, well we will see, hard to belive he could go through so many teams and have no one see what nolan sees – meaning nolan is an idiot and has to go with a guy who at least knows the system (for now). Anyway, with regards to d-fence, all I have to say is Ravens, when they won the super bowl. Crappy QB, one hell of a defence. Defence wins games, but don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we will win the super bowl with these guys, all I am saying is we will win more then 6 games. Your point is well taken though, so I will revise my estimate to 8 and 8.

Do you think Montana is too old to come out of retirement? Hell Farve did it – the old fart.

Comment by 49er 69her

I respectfully disagree.

Alex Smith has had one season that counts for anything. One season he had to learn how to play pro ball. One season was lost to injury. 24 games as a healthy starter is not enough to judge a guy who played the spread/option in college.

First let me just say that I have been a niner fan since 1980, when I was 8 years old. Been a hell of a ride and will die a niner fan.

Now….

You can throw all the facts and data you want to make a case for Alex. But I tend to trust my gut when looking at talent, cause no matter how many facts you look at to make a “prediction” you can be sure of only one thing. That prediction will always be wrong. Anyway, when I look at Alex play there is nothing that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. He is a bust. BUST! Time to move on dude, what ever the reason (hurt, 3 OC, first year as a pro) he is not our future. Hopefully, we get lucky in a draft and find another Montana, Brady. BTW – do you know we could have selected Brady in that draft. We had the pick to get him. I guess that just supports my insight that no matter how much facts and data you have you will never be dead on in your “prediction”. Keeping your fingers crossed that JTO or Hill has what it takes to win us 8!

Comment by 49er 69her

Okay.

Comment by indianajim

LOL! Hey Go niners!

Comment by 49er 69her

Good stuff, Jim… I check your blog here weekly, and usually agree with what I see. I also agree with a 6 or 7 win season with JTO under center. I would have added a few more wins if Alex was staring , and Martz had been working ONLY with him until now. Anyway, I posted this one on my regular forum, and keep up the good work.

Comment by oldman9er

alex smith is the worst quarterback weve ever had. what you see from him is what you would of saw from jim drunkenmiller if he would have started 2 years for us. mike nolan looks like such a bad coach because alex smith can only hit a reciever who is not moving. we never do a slant cuz he cant hit a man who is on the run. we won games and scored points with shaun hill and hostler and we lost games and couldnt score at all with smith and hostler. the coaches arent the problem. smith is. are defense is way better than it was last year. vernon davis looked like a bust because alex smith doesnt have the arm to hit the deep ball, and osullivan does. frank gore will be a beast this year he will not be stopped. and he is a great reciever. im so sick of hearing that he isnt. we will make the playoffs and win games no one expects us to win.

Comment by 49ersfannn

49ersfannn I’m with you on Frank Gore.

Here’s hoping O’Sullivan proves his worth.

Comment by indianajim

hey you see every game through the magic of the internet? how do you do that? can you provide a link? sometimes i don’t feel like going to a sports bar and i’m in southern california and we rarely get the 49er games on regular tv.. help?

Comment by buzzkillington

Is anyone else wondering what the heck happened to considering that Shaun Hill fella? I was impressed with him at the end of last season and could have sworn they’d give him a shot at continuing his success. Why mess with a winning formula? He’s got a better win % than either of the other two, he knows how to get rid of the ball quickly and safely, PUT HIM IN for chrissake!

Good post, amazing looking weblog, added it to my favorites!
